Have you ever been around a group of people and someone's phone rings? Everyone else grabs their phone thinking it's theirs because people seem to use the same ringtone. Apple has 29 ringtones built into iPhones but if you've wanted to personalize your ring, you've been forced to purchase tones in iTunes. Those generally cost $1.29.

I'm not the kind of person who likes spending $1.29 on :30 of a song so I started using Ringtones #1. It's an app for iPhones that lets you create your own ringtones from the music on your phone.

Here's how it works:

The first time you open the app it will ask to access your music library. You then select a song either by browsing your library or searching for a title. Ringtones #1 then asks you to clip a portion of the song to use as a ringtone. That part is pretty easy. It has a slider which you move along a timeline of the song. You can listen to your edits as you go along.

Once you create and save the ringtone you'll have to jump through some hoops getting it in your library of tones. This is a little tedious but the app has step-by-step directions.

I had to connect my phone to my computer and find it in iTunes. Then you open the tab in iTunes that says "File Sharing.” Scroll until you see "Ringtones #1" and click on "Save.” You might have to refresh iTunes to see the ringtones you created.

I then found those ringtones within the File Sharing and Ringtones #1 screen. Copied and pasted them on my computer's desktop. Once that's done you slide those files back over to your phone's "Tones" library. Then you're done.

Now you can open up settings on your phone, tap sounds and haptics and you should see all of your created ringtones alongside the ones that came loaded onto the phone. You can set one to play everytime the phone rings or you get a text message. You can also select a different song for contacts. Simply find the person or number, then choose one of your created ringtones for that number.

Ringtones #1 is a free app if you don't mind putting up with pop-up ads. There are quite a few and they pop up sometimes when you're creating a ringtone. You're also limited to creating one ringtone at first. To create more you'll have to watch video ads for other apps.

If you don't want to see any ads, you can subscribe to Ringtones #1 for $4.99 per month.
