NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee Democrat Karl Dean is giving campaign trail shout-outs to Republican Gov. Bill Haslam even as Dean seeks to replace him.

Never mind that the popular term-limited governor is backing Dean's GOP opponent, Bill Lee.

Dean wants to convince the red state's voters that he and Haslam are more moderate than Lee on several contentious policies.

Dean and Haslam support expanding Medicaid. Both want students who were brought or kept in the country illegally from a young age to be eligible for in-state tuition at public colleges and universities. And they oppose a push to let teachers carry guns at school.

Lee holds opposite views on those issues.

In a TV ad, Haslam has praised Lee as someone who will make "the right decisions, not the political ones."
